Today marks the commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr., the chief spokesman of the nonviolent civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. Soon after his assassination in 1968, many campaigned for a federal holiday in King’s honor. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan sign the holiday into law, and it was first observed in 1986.
